1996 Toyota Rav4
The RAV4 is Toyota's new pet aimed at the entry-level sport-utility market. The
name is an acronym for "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel Drive", and it
is the most sophisticated, car-like piece of equipment yet in its segment. The
Rav4 completes the sport-utility line under Toyota's reliable name. Sport-utilities
have come a long way, they are now what used to be the station wagons of yore.
These useful creatures started out as something with-in the pick-up category,
but since manufacturers have to respond to the consumers' demands for SUVs that
would provide comfort and convenience along with practicality, its design have
shape-shifted from being rugged-like to car-like.
Now, sport utility vehicles are equipped with powerful engine with surprising
towing capacities and huge cargo space in the interior. And though most of these
vehicles only find their way in suburban and paved areas, their make and specs
also allow them to achieve optimum off-road performance. The RAV4 comes in the
two-door and four-door form. Surprisingly, it has plenty of functionality and
style. Its high stand, short facade and rear projection create a look that is
geared up for any off-road condition.
Lower body shell go well with the front and rear bumpers and assist in giving
it a rugged look and keep abrasions and scratches to a minimum, whether they be
from shopping carts or trees, rocks, and wild animals. A well-sculpted hood and
side panels add an elegant touch. Alloy wheels and large tires complete the look.
The RAV4 has dual air bags and side-impact beams in the doors. Rear passengers
have 3-point seatbelts. The front shoulder straps are height-adjustable. Antilock
brakes are optionally offered. This vehicle is fitted with a 120-horsepower, 4-cylinder,
2-liter twin-cam engine.
A curb weight under 3,000 lbs give the 4-door RAV4 performance equivalent to
a good number of compact station wagons and fuel economy better than most SUVs.
It has abundant power for all city and highway conditions. The engine performs
soundly with the optional 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.
There are no out of the way items on the sides, and the mirrors can be folded
back to avoid snagging on branches or jutting objects while driving around. Ground
clearance is realistic and all-important parts beneath are kept securely out of
the way which provides added protection against road debris.
